CD - Light Years

Light YearsCD Review
Title: Light Years
Artist: Chick Corea/Elektric Band
Release Date:1987
www.chickcorea.com

This is the second album from the Elektric Band.  It was at this point in the bands history that Frank Gambale on guitar and Eric Marienthal on saxophone joined the line up to form what is considered the traditional team by most, including Chick Corea himself.  Bass sounds are provided by the clockwork hand of John Patitucci and Dave Weckl can be heard on drums.

Track List:
1. Light Years (3:54)
2. Second Sight (4:24)
3. Flamingo (4:10)
4. Prism (3:30)
5. Time Track (5:03)
6. Starlight (3:52)
7. Your Eyes (3:52)
8. The Dragon (5:30)
9. View From The Outside (6:30)
10. Smokescreen (4:12)
11. Hymn Of the Heart (6:39)
12. Kaleidoscope (8:04)

The album is a series of fairly short tracks, although the longest, 'Kaleidoscope' plays for over 8mins and features several Gambale lead pieces.  The title track uses a more traditional jazz approach with the saxophone of Marienthal being evident.  'Prism' uses Chicks organ set to pipe mode, in what can only be described as 'the one left over from the previous album'.  'Hymn of the Heart' is a classic Elektric Band format with all band members playing together and the slap beat makes this piece very memorable, it is surprising that this is buried at second to last on the playlist.

'The Dragon' takes top marks as best track in the authors view.  The track has perfect precision in all corners of the stage including Weckl's beats and Corea's Yamaha. This track is not overly improvised and sticks to the basic melodic theme from beginning to end.  The CD is yet another masterful set by Mr. Corea and friends and is well worth owning as part of any fusion jazz collection.
