Title: The Chick Corea Elektric Band
Artist: Chick Corea/Elektric Band
Release Date:1986
www.chickcorea.com
This was the first album by the new Elektric Band formed after the
Return to Forever band broke up. Chick introduces us to Dave Weckl
(drums) and John Patitucci (bass guitar). Frank Gambale did not
join the band until later and lead guitarists Scott Henderson and Carlos
Rios are featured on several tracks. 'City Gate' familiar to us
for years as a Midi file on early PCs is in fact only the albums intro,
and lasts less than a minute. The Album really gets going with
'Cool Weasel Boogie' which is pure Corea fusion that has a rounded Jazz
beat that seems to shout the modern 80's sound.
Track List:
1. City Gate (0:54)
2. Rumble (4:04)
3. Sidewalk (3:48)
4. Got a match? (5:38)
5. Cool Weasel Boogie (6:43)
6. Elekric City (4:07)
7. No Zone (5:29)
8. King Cockroach (6:56)
9. India Town (5:06)
10. All Love (5:45)
11. Silver Temple (8:32)
There is not much acoustic instrumentation going on here as all the
tracks seem very electronic and almost computer generated, this is most
evident with 'No Zone'. In fact Chick had split his genre by
creating the 'Acoustic Band' as a separate entity, with different
members and so concentrated on this modern sound here. As with
many of Chick's albums inspiration comes from author L. Ron Hubbard and
some far off space city.
This album is a vital part of the Corea career path, and also any fusion
Jazz collection. All the artists involved in this album will by
now have realized that, over 20 years later this was an essential
stepping stone for them and a cornerstone for the rest of us in Jazz
history.
