Title: The Ultimate Adventure
Artist: Chick Corea
Release Date:2007

This is the companion to the CD of the same name released in 2006. Like Chick’s previous title To the stars this CD was inspired by an L. Ron Hubbard story of the same name. The entire live show is filmed in the ornate setting of Barcelona’s Palau de la Música Catalana during the Barcelona 2005 Jazz festival directed by the award-winning Spanish director Xavier Atance. The performance includes many of the artists from the CD including Jorge Pardo - flute, Carles Benavant – bass guitar, Tom Brechtlein – drums and Rubem Dantas - percussion.
The 9 track list includes many from the CD plus 2 final additional
pieces ‘Kalimba’ and ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’ at which point the band is
joined by Flamenco dancers Auxi Fernandez and Tomasito Romero.
The atmosphere of the music is quite unlike many of Chick’s earlier stage performances with several long sequences of percussion and Palmas (flamenco hand clapping). Its “Flamenco, salsa, jazz, chamber music” says Brechtlein in a bonus interview. Chick is obviously very proud of this latest work and introduces the set to the eagerly awaiting audience with the words ‘everything is new music tonight’. Whilst the first 7 tracks retain the theme of the originals on the CD the feel is more Spanish and improvisational. Frank Gambale and Steve Gadd who featured on the CD do not show up although Gadd can be seen in the ‘Behind the scenes’ track along with a short interview with Chick himself in the bonus material also on the DVD.
In all, a very pleasing piece of work with excellent sound
quality which makes it hard to skip over or stop once the play
button has been pressed.
Sound: DTS, 5.1 Dolby surround.
Running time: 121mins
